Musician - A bargain victim
Musician: A bargain Victim
It would be unfair to admst the global pandemic crisis #covid19 but Musicians are the only such people in demand after Doctors and Administration, But unfortunately nobody cares about considering them paid.
Nobody dares to ask twice when paying a fee to a doctor, lawyer or even a vegetable seller these days yet musician and music professionals such as music teacher community face a daily challenge of bargain for there services.
No matter of number of amazing experience in the industry, musician and music teacher have always been a victim of this unfortunate testimony. Musicians are often exploited in the name of "Exposure" "Lifetime opportunity" and such useless impractical biased offers.
In my more than 20 years of experience in this music industry, I have been facing this unpleasant hospitality since a long long time. If we leave the silver lining of famous Institutes , celebs and famous professionals an average unheard , social beaten Poor musician has to go through a lot.
Fortunately not every music professional has to go all the way being exploited, there are good people too in the society, who give a lot of respect and treat Musicians with great hospitality.
Yes absolutely true people should understand
ReplyDeleteThank you for bringing light to this important topic! I hope there will be a rise in public support for local and smaller artists as this would help the music industry in India to grow!
ReplyDeleteTrue That \m/
ReplyDeleteBe it schools, universities, social gatherings or functions etc. music seems to be an inseparable part but it comes to paying for it masses seem reluctant. The mindset needs to change if circumstances have to be changed.
ReplyDeleteNicely written. I often notice musicians quickly become ‘noone’ after the curtain drop. As if they are the puppets! This mindset of people can be changed only when the number of cultured people increase in a society.
ReplyDeleteThose who love art, must love the artiste. We in DELHI-NCR have been spoiled with frequent music recital at zero cost. Big and established organisations get sponsors or Govt aid that too for star and top ranking Artistes and are in a position to pay remuneration as per their demand and status.
ReplyDeleteBut what about middle level artistes who have chosen music as their whole time vocation/profession? They are always in search of good platform and audience. Most patrons of music do organise their programmes but paying them suitable amount is ignored most of the time. A shawl, a Nariyal or bouquet is considered enough most of the time. Artistes also cannot afford to ask any fee for fear of getting delisted for future programne.
A time has come when, the patrons, the music lovers and organisers must decide to pay suitable honorarium to the artiste. Practice of free baithak/programmes must be dispensed with forthwith. It should be considered to attend a free programne of good music, specially the Indian classical music a SIN.
If Artistes are not patronised properly, the art will not prosper.
Till some other sound system develops, there is no harm in asking for a minimum entry fee. Or a box at each baithak may be kept for contributions by the audience for the Artistes If a reasonable amount is not collected in such ways, it is incumbent on the hosts or organisers to meet the remunerations of the Artistes.
Music is a necessary element of our daily lives . But sadly ppl associated with this industry aren't given much recognition. They deserve lots more. Our society needs to be more sensitive towards the budding , hardworking or experienced artists. They deserve it all. Just a few known names gather all the glitter nd many many remain in shade. I wish all such artists love nd luck.
